Aversion therapies were used for a short time in the 1960s for a number of behavioral problems, such as alcohol dependence, drug addiction, and depression. Some therapists experimented with aversion or “shock” therapies in an attempt to help reorient clients with same-sex attraction. In these therapies, when a male client was shown pictures of attractive men, he would also receive an electric shock or be caused to vomit, which presumably would produce an aversion for his attraction toward men. Today, such treatments are considered unethical and are not performed by reputable therapists.
